Dover Athletic defender Jacob Mensah outlines five-goal target for the season as Whites build on 1-1 weekend draw with their 4-1 National League South home success against Hornchurch
Jacob Mensah has a goal target he wants to reach for Dover this season.
The centre-back bagged just his second goal of the campaign in last weekend’s 1-1 National League South home draw against play-off chasing Weston-super-Mare.
“I want to finish the season with at least five,” Mensah revealed.
“That’s something I’m working towards. I’m trying to work on headers from corners and just being aware of drop-downs.
“That’s my goal and, hopefully, I can get there.”
Mensah’s effort against the Seagulls came from a long throw by central defensive partner Harry Beadle as his near-post shot was deflected past keeper Max Harris.
He said: “Nowadays, every level uses a long throw.
“Where Beads has got a long throw, that’s another asset for us - and then there’s the deliveries. The deliveries have been good.
“There have been corners, like the in-swinging ones from Harrison Sodje, which is a good base to have.”
Mensah’s only other goal this season also came at Crabble as he bagged a last-gasp leveller in a 1-1 draw against Horsham in October.
The 25-year-old accepted goals feel more special when they end up not coming in losing causes.
“When you’re contributing and you know you’re getting a point out of it, it sits nicely, rather than scoring and then maybe conceding a couple of goals and losing the game,” he explained. “Then, it sort of means nothing.
“When it helps you get a point, it does feel good.”
Mensah and Beadle combined for the goal against Weston-super-Mare - the latter battling through illness - to help fill the void left by centre-back Jalen Jones.
The former Ramsgate, Maidstone and Welling United man felt extra responsibility to step up in the absence of the banned Jones, who has had a strong first season at Dover.
