Double black armbands show Australian pain

This was a day that required not one black armband, but two.

Australia's sombre players, clearly carrying both Shane Warne and Rod Marsh with them, wore two armbands onto Pindi Cricket Stadium as fans held up signs commemorating the duo.

Rarely in the history of Australian cricket has the sport endured a day of such double heartbreak.

Friday began with Australia's players waking up to the death of Marsh, a man they knew as a mentor and selector who had touched all of them.

It ended in even more heartbreak, told as they entered the team bus of the passing of Warne from a suspected heart attack, the kind of news that no-one could have predicted for the 52-year-old.

If the 2001 Mumbai fixture between Australia is known as the Bradman Test, this one will forever be inextricably linked to Warne and Marsh.

"It's just a really tough time with both Rod and Shane," Cummins said before play on Saturday.

"We're just being quite open about it and just everyone looking out for each other.

"Everyone works through it differently. Everyone knew Shane but some knew him better than others.

"We're just here for each other as we process it all."

For almost every one of Australia's players, Warne was a hero growing up.

For others he was a close ally and mentor.

Fellow spinner Nathan Lyon was among those who looked the most upset, comforted by players after a minute's silence.

Steve Smith told News Corp before play of how Warne made him want to be a spinner, before debuting himself a blond leggie some 12 years ago.
