Donal Óg Cusack: Let process take its course to fill Rebel hotseat

Former Cork goalkeeper Donal Óg Cusack reckons the Rebels should not rush in to an appointment for "one of the most prestigious jobs in hurling" in the wake of Kieran Kingston's departure as manager of the county side.

Kingston stepped down this week after his second stint in charge, having stepped back into the position in 2020 before guided them to last year's All-Ireland final, where they lost out to Limerick.

His three-year term came to an end when Galway defeated Cork in last month's All-Ireland quarter-finals and he informed the county board he would not be seeking another term in charge.

Speaking on RTÉ's The Sunday Game, Cusack was coy on his own designs on the job, but he did admit that any former Cork player would dream of one day taking up the big job.

"Kieran Kingston has been an outstanding servant," Cusack said. "He won an All-Ireland medal as a player. I was involved with him as a player so I know, I've seen the work he put in it. He owes Cork absolutely nothing.

"I'm a Cork player, I played for Cork since I was 14. The Cork manager's job is one of the most prestigious and important jobs in hurling.

"Anybody who has played and been involved with Cork of course would love to manage Cork at some stage. But there's a process there and we should let the process take its course."

Beside Cusack in the Sunday Game studio, former Waterford, Clare and Wexford boss Davy Fitzgerald kept his cards just as close to his chest but neither man ruled himself out of the running to take the reins from Cusack.
