Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson ‘remains a top target’ for Leeds United ahead of the summer transfer window, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Whites were unable to make any additions to Marcelo Bielsa’s first-team squad throughout January but did see multiple bids turned down for the 18-cap USA international.

Aaronson has already made a big impression at Salzburg since arriving from Philadelphia Union in his homeland back in January 2021.

In 55 appearances for the Austrian champions, the creative talent has scored 12 goals and laid on a further 14 assists for his grateful teammate, claiming a domestic double last term.

And his impressive performances at the Red Bull Arena evidently caught the eye of the Leeds hierarchy, who attempted to bring Aaronson to west Yorkshire last month.

According to The Athletic, Bielsa’s charges saw a £15 million offer rejected by Salzburg for their prized asset in the winter window as they didn’t want to lose any firepower ahead of their Champions League clash against Bayern Munich.

Sky Sports then claimed the Elland Road outfit increased their offer to £20m for the 21-year-old engine room operator, although it also proved to be unsuccessful, and he ended up staying put.

Well-respected eporter Phil Hay recently disclosed how ‘everyone’ believes Aaronson will be available for transfer when the market re-opens in the summer, providing hope that a deal can finally be concluded.

And O’Rourke has now reiterated that point of view, claiming Leeds still want to recruit ‘two midfielders’ ahead of next season and that Aaronson is at the top of their wish list.
