'Don't think he's a good enough player for Rangers' - Journalist issues 'brutally honest' claim

Earlier this week, the Light Blues confirmed that the centre-forward would be returning to his native Switzerland to join BSC Young Boys for an undisclosed fee.

He scored for the Gers in their final league game of the season as Giovanni van Bronckhorst rang the changes ahead of the Europa League final, with Itten having played just four minutes of Scottish Premiership football across the 14 previous games.

The 25-year-old was shipped out on loan to German side Greuther Furth for the first half of this past campaign but failed to make an impact upon his return to Glasgow – and it is fair to say that McFarlane was never convinced.

Speaking on the Rangers Review YouTube channel, he said: “I’m going to be brutally honest, I just don’t think he’s a good enough player for Rangers Football Club. I just don’t think he’s got the skillset, as simple as that.”

The 6ft 2in frontman was signed by Steven Gerrard in the summer of 2020 on a four-year contract, but managed just six goals in 37 appearances last season and found himself down the pecking order behind Kemar Roofe and Alfredo Morelos, leaving him surplus to requirements.

He failed to live up to the billing having netted 19 goals in 34 Swiss Super League matches in the campaign prior to his Ibrox move, and it is clear that Van Bronckhorst never really fancied him, deciding to often deploy Joe Aribo through the middle as an unorthodox striker when both Roofe and Morelos were injured – and it’s apparent from McFarlane’s comments that he wasn’t taken by the forward, either.
