Mouse droppings, encrusted grime, a filthy air filter and cockroaches. These are images captured at Oldham's ten dirtiest takeaways.

All ten have now been shut down by the council. The owners must clean up their act before they can re-open, and town hall officers will be making drive-by checks to ensure they don't try to open up again on the sly. If there have been no improvements after another inspection the businesses face prosecution.

One of the ten was caught after complaining to the council about fly-tipping near his premises. The council turned out to his complaint and also did a routine check of his premises which was due - and found a mouse and a cockroach.

The council took action over the last few weeks after the ten premises failed routine food hygiene inspections - potentially putting residents at risk. Environmental Health officers regularly visit premises - including takeaways, restaurants and sites where food is prepared - across the borough to check they are up to standard.

A council spokesman said: "The majority are clean and are maintained to a good standard. Unfortunately, a small number fall below this. Our staff found uncontrolled pest infestations including mice and cockroaches - or both - in some of the premises they recently visited.

"Droppings were discovered on surfaces and food wrapping material, meaning the food customers eat could have been contaminated. All the businesses were immediately closed.

"They will remain shut until they have been re-inspected and food hygiene standards have improved."
