Discover the fascinating history of the Romans at one of Britain's 'most exciting archaeological sites'

Roman Vindolanda, in the heart of the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site, is regarded as one of Britain’s most exciting archaeological sites.

Boasting 2,000-year-old postcards, a collection of over 5,000 ancient leather shoes, and even a Roman wooden toilet seat, Vindolanda gets you closer to our Roman past than anywhere else in Britain and beyond.

This summer, head to Hadrian’s Wall and explore this inspirational site, witness live archaeology taking place, and truly immerse yourself in history.

Throughout the summer, you can join guided tours of the fort and listen to the expert guides who bring the site back to life. Full-scale replica sections of Hadrian’s Wall and a charming Roman temple have been recreated which you can explore.

The museum at Vindolanda houses an unrivalled collection of Roman artefacts, a time capsule of everyday life that gives you a unique window into what it was really like at this northern outpost.

Some of Britain’s top treasures, the Vindolanda Writing Tablets, are displayed in a vaulted room with the handwritten messages still clearly visible.

Visitors can enjoy the on-site café which has a large outdoor patio area and raised decking that overlooks the museum gardens. Picnic places are plentiful around the site, including by the stream that runs through the gardens.

Only seven miles from Vindolanda, you can also visit the Roman Army Museum and Magna Roman Fort. The Roman Army Museum uses clever technology to bring the past to life - with interactive and engaging displays helping you to understand what life was like for Roman soldiers.

Go back to school and learn some Latin in the specially designed Roman classroom, sign up to the Roman Army at the recruitment tent, and don’t miss the
