Diplopia returns for Marquez, recovery time unknown

Repsol Honda has announced Marc Marquez is suffering from diplopia once again, following his high speed warm up crash at Mandalika Circuit on Sunday.

Initially declared unfit after suffering concussion from a major turn seven high side during warm up for the Indonesian Grand Prix, all but several minor traumas were ruled out after Marquez was transferred to the local hospital in Mataram, the capital of the island of Lombok.

During the journey back to Spain, however, the eight-time World Champion began to experience discomfort with his vision. Upon arrival in Barcelona on Monday, Marquez undertook an emergency visit to the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona with his trusted ophthalmologist, Dr. Sánchez Dalmau, who confirmed a relapse in the diplopia suffered last November. His rehabilitation period is unknown at this stage, with the Spaniard forced to refrain from training or competing on two wheels for a near-three month period at the close of last year.

A visit to his medical team, led by Dr. Samuel Antuña, at the Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid on Tuesday morning, saw Marquez complete a general medical check-up to evaluate all bruises caused by the crash and a brain MRI. This has reconfirmed that he is not suffering any other injuries.

“The neuro-ophthalmological evaluation carried out on Marc Marquez on Monday after the head injury that occurred at the Indonesian Grand Prix, shows a new episode of diplopia caused by a recurrence of paralysis of the fourth right nerve, with less involvement than the one that occurred in the injury in November 2021,” Ophthalmologist, Doctor Sánchez Dalmau confirmed.
