Diego Simeone responds to claims he sarcastically clapped Pep Guardiola before brawl

Diego Simeone has denied sarcastically applauding Pep Guardiola and the Manchester City bench before tempers flared in Madrid.

Atletico Madrid were unable to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit against the English champions at the Wanda Metropolitano. The game ended in unsavoury scenes as players from both teams were involved in a mass brawl, which eventually saw a huge clash in the tunnel.

Simeone, who was booked late on, spent the latter minutes applauding in an attempt to whip up the home crowd. He has denied that his gesture was directed sarcastically at his opponent. Guardiola was under no illusion of the task that faced his side as they eyed a second successive last four appearance. The City boss claimed they had to "suffer" as they held out and their composure was tested but was full of praise for his players.
