Diego Forlan rates Darwin Nunez's chances of succeeding at Man Utd

Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan believes Benfica starlet Darwin Nunez will thrive at Old Trafford.

United are looking to prioritise the signing of a young forward this summer with Erik ten Hag set to arrive as the club’s new permanent manager.

Recent reports suggest 22-year-old Nunez is the club’s no1 target having scored 32 goals in all competitions for Benfica this season – including efforts home and away to Liverpool in the Champions League.

The Uruguay international has also been strongly linked with both Arsenal and Chelsea but former United star Forlan believes his countryman could be an ideal fit at United.

‘He is a young, guy, a very strong guy scoring a lot of goals and doing very well at Benfica,’ Forlan told Beyond the Pitch.

‘He has had a really good Champions League season and in the Portuguese league. He has a lot of potential, he is very young, he is improving season by season and if he has the opportunity to go to Man Utd it would be really good for him and for the club.’

Asked if Nunez is ready for a move to the Premier League, Forlan continued: ‘He has been doing very well. He scored goals in the Champions League, against Liverpool. It is a very good number [of goals he scored], six in the Champions League.

‘He scored home and away against Liverpool, he is always creating chances.

‘Maybe he will come to United and adapt immediately, maybe he will take a little bit of time because it is not the same as playing in Portugal.

‘But I think he would be up to the level of playing in the Premier League.’
