Diarmuid Kilgallen double sees impressive Connacht overcome Glasgow

Connacht scored 20 unanswered points in 15 second-half minutes to see off Glasgow Warriors 34-26 at the Sportsground to maintain their winning start to the BKT United Rugby Championship.

A pair of tries in either half from Diarmuid Kilgallen were pivotal for the hosts, with JJ Hanrahan and Cathal Forde sharing 19 points from the kicking tee as they won on an identical margin to their opening day victory over Ospreys last week.

They trailed at the break, however, Tom Jordan's try on the stroke of half-time had Warriors leading 19-14, with Kyle Rowe scoring on his debut and their maul forcing a penalty try.

However, a dominant third quarter saw Connacht gain control, with Dylan Tierney-Martin's 46th minute try nudging them in front again.

Indeed, Glasgow leaked 15 points from penalties and were held scoreless for most of the final 40 minutes.

With Hanrahan, having racked up nine points in the first half, forced to hand off kicking duties after shipping a heavy tackle, inside centre Cathal Forde helped Connacht build a score with two penalties in quick succession.

Kilgallen's intercept try virtually assured Connacht of the victory, though the grounding was dicier than it needed to be. Trailing by 15 at that stage, replacement Jamie Dobie got over for a late score, Glasgow's first of the second half.


Summer signing Hanrahan was influential from the tee again, landing three penalties inside the opening 14 minutes to settle Connacht into their stride. The middle one came on the back of a Joe Joyce interception.
