Devastating aftermath of huge fire as crews work at scene

An industrial unit has been left badly damaged after a fire broke out in Stockport last night.

The blaze broke out at the building on Far Cromwell Road at around 11.10pm on Wednesday evening (October 16). The commercial unit, which the M.E.N. understands is not currently being used, was believed to have been empty at the time.

Eight fire engines raced to the scene, as well as a number of specialist appliances. Crews worked into the early hours to extinguish the huge flames.

This morning, pictures showed the upper floor of the building left charred and burnt out following the blaze. A number of fire service vehicles remained on the scene, with a hose being used overhead to dampen down the area.

The fire has now been 'brought under control', a spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said. Though local residents who live near the industrial estate should continue to keep their windows and doors shut due to any smoke.

People should avoid the area. A stretch of Far Cromwell Road also remains shut.

At around 2.15am this morning, the fire service said: "Firefighters are in attendance at a fire involving a commercial unit on Cromwell Road, Bredbury in Stockport. Nearby residents are advised to keep their windows and doors closed and to avoid the area."

In an update at 7.45am, GMFRS said in a statement: "Shortly before 11:10pm last night (Wednesday 16 October), eight fire engines from across Greater Manchester and specialist appliances including a High Volume Pump and Aerial Units were called to the scene of a fire at a commercial building on Cromwell Road, Bredbury in Stockport.
