'Deserved that' - Steven Gerrard fumes as Aston Villa booed after Watford defeat

Steven Gerrard and his Aston Villa players were booed off the pitch after their defeat at home to Watford, with the manager claiming his side deserved the hostile reaction.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Gerrard stated: "Well the result is not good enough. We've been booed off today and I think we deserve that.

"We've played three teams in the last three games, all behind us in the league and we've managed to take one point so I'm very much aware that those results are not enough. I need to take whatever is going to come our way.

"In terms of the performance and how the game panned out, we thought it was going to look like it did. Having to beat the block, playing against a side that were dangerous on the counter attack, so nothing surprised us there.

"We haven't had enough quality in the final third today. I'm aware of that and so are the players.

"We've had 19 shots but only managed one on target, so we haven't worked Ben Foster anywhere near enough and that falls on my shoulders. That's on me and my staff to be more inventive and creative in the final third.

"We've got talented players in there. We've got internationals, Brazilians, Argentinians and England internationals. Players have got to want to get in the right areas and people have got to want to create and score. The result falls on me, I'll take that and I'll take the heat to protect the players but moving forward you need to be better in the final third.

"One thing I can guarantee is that myself and my staff will do everything that we can to turn around. We've come here and worked ever so hard to put in really big performances and real positive results but that is fading away now so we need to wake up."
