Derek McInnes vows giving Celtic and Rangers bloody noses is not enough as Kilmarnock boss reveals real ambition

Old Firm slayer Derek McInnes has revealed he wants to end a dream campaign at Kilmarnock with a place in this season’s Scottish Cup Final.

The Rugby Park boss pulled off the latest in a line of shock results on Saturday when his side stunned champions Celtic with a late equaliser and 1-1 draw - to throw a major spanner into the race for the title. McInnes had already masterminded an opening day of the season win over Rangers in August before knocking Celtic out of the League Cup - then following that up with another victory in Ayrshire over Brendan Rodgers in the league.

His rebuilt side is now sitting fourth place in the table with a shot at European qualification between now and May. But, in an exclusive interview with Record Sport , McInnes admits he wants to cap it all off by leading his side out at Hampden for the end of season showpiece. Killie face Aberdeen at home on SPFL duty this weekend having already been drawn against the manager’s former club in the quarter finals of the cup.

And, asked to chart his aims for the remainder of the campaign, McInnes said: “If we can finish top six that would be massive for us, considering where we were two years ago. My first game was Queen of the South away down at Palmerston. We were a million miles away then from where we are now as a club both on the park and off it.

“So the aim is top six and then the question is, ‘Can we get back to Hampden in a cup final?’ I was working with TV for the Rangers-Aberdeen League Cup Final in December and I have to admit, I was so jealous that I wasn’t standing in the dugout with my team.
