Derby County old boy trains with Birmingham City as Blues allow winger to leave on loan

The weekend is here and it's match-day, here's all the latest Blues news from BirminghamLive

Former Liverpool trainee Andre Wisdom is training with Birmingham City amid the club’s search for defensive reinforcements.

With the transfer window shut Blues are restricted to the free agent market and the 28-year-old has been without a club since leaving Derby County at the end of last season.

Wisdom, who can play right back or centre half, spent four years at Pride Park making 107 appearances and after joining Liverpool as a youngster also spent time on loan with Norwich, Red Bull Salzburg and West Bromwich Albion.

It was at The Hawthorns in the 2016/2017 season where he played with Blues’ technical director Craig Gardner, who has moved to provide Lee Bowyer with the help he so obviously needs.

Wisdom played 40 times for the Rams last term, the vast majority of them at centre half although most of his earlier career was spent at right back.

Wisdom, who can play right-back or in central defender, has been without a club since the end of last season. But why?

BirminghamLive has been told Wisdom expected to be offered a new contract at his previous club, Derby, where he had spent the last four years.

Even though his last deal expired in June 2021 and he was unable to agree terms, he returned as normal for pre-season and trained as part of Wayne Rooney’s squad.

He suffered a bout of illness towards the end of July and before Derby’s recruitment plans were turned upside down.

The Rams were placed under a transfer embargo allowing them to sign only four players - which was later relaxed.

With Wisdom ill and having missed warm-up games with Real Betis and Notts County, Rooney brought back Curtis Davies.
