Derby County figure set to seal Manchester United switch following Erik ten Hag request

Derby County senior adviser Steve McClaren is set to become a part of Manchester United’s coaching staff, according to The Telegraph journalist Jason Burt.

It is understood that Erik ten Hag, who is set to become the Red Devils’ new manager this summer, requested McClaren to become a part of the club’s new set-up when he was negotiating a move to Old Trafford.

Burt has suggested that it would be a major shock if McClaren doesn’t seal a switch to United.

The 61-year-old stepped down as Derby’s technical director last September after the club entered administration but has remained at Pride Park as an adviser.

McClaren made this decision in order to help the club preserve other jobs that were under threat.

Derby will be hoping that a proposed takeover deal involving Chris Kirchner will be completed in the not-too-distant future as they prepare for life in League One.

Kirchner’s exclusivity period was extended earlier this week as he aims to strike an agreement with former Derby owner Mel Morris over the purchase of the club’s stadium.

With the transfer window set to open next month, it could turn out to be an extremely busy summer of activity at Derby.

With ten Hag seemingly keen to include McClaren as part of United’s plans for the future, it wouldn’t be at all surprising if the Derby advisor seals a switch to the Premier League outfit in the coming weeks.

McClaren previously worked as the Red Devils’ assistant manager for two years before embarking on a managerial career in 2001.

In his two separate spells in charge of Derby, McClaren achieved a mixed amount of success.
