Derby County 0-1 Cardiff City: Jordan Hugill scores the only goal as Bluebirds end the season with a win

Cardiff City finished their season in positive fashion as a goal from Jordan Hugill was enough to earn all three points in a 1-0 victory over Derby County.

Following a tense and toughly-fought first half, the Bluebirds struck shortly after the break after some wonderful work by young Eli King, who did well to set up Hugill for his fourth Bluebirds goal - a perfect way for him to end his loan spell with the club.

After a string of underwhelming results, the 1,700 travelling Bluebirds fans, who were excellent all afternoon, certainly deserved a win to cap off what has been a hard season for them.

An hour before kick-off there was a slight eyebrow raise when six defenders were named by Steve Morison, but it later transpired that Perry Ng would operate as a sitting midfielder. A position in which he thrived, it later transpired.

There was a return to the side for Joel Bagan at left wing-back, while there was no Will Vaulks or Tommy Doyle in City's matchday squad.

The game itself smacked of two below-par teams cancelling each other out. The opening 30 minutes you could virtually write off as a non-event, save the odd speculative shot from distance from the hosts.

The atmosphere inside Pride Park was electric despite the turgid opening, it must be said. The Rams faithful packed out the stadium and cheered on their already-relegated team, seemingly united against the club's ownership.

But the temperature on the pitch did just take a hike as the first half drew to a close. Liam Thompson registered the first real chance of the match when he sent a bending effort low to Dillon Phillips' left, forcing the goalkeeper to leap and tip it away from danger.
