Delta Queens battle Scorpions, others in Malawi as Africa Club Hockey Championships begin

The 2023 Africa Club Hockey Championships will begin today in Blantyre, Malawi, with Nigeria’s representative in the women’s category, Delta Queens Hockey team of Asaba, eyeing a podium finish. The tournament will end on November 26.

Delta Queens Hockey team left Lagos on Thursday for Blantyre. The Director General of Delta Sports Commission, Chris Anazia, led the delegation, made up of 18 players and three coaches. Also on the trip were the Director of Audit, Festus Owhojero and the Special Assistant to the Sports Commission Chairman, Victor Ashakpo. The team had a stopover in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Thursday night.

Speaking with The Guardian, yesterday, the Chairman of Delta Sports Commission, Chief Tonobok Okowa, said the team is fully prepared for the task in Malawi, adding that he is optimistic it will finish among top teams at the end of championship.

According to the head coach, Ade Jacob, Delta Queens Hockey team will open the championship today with a fixture against Lakers of Kenya in Pool A. Their other opponents are Malawi’s Scorpions and Genetrix. Okowa is expected to join the team soon.
