Dean Jones predicts Gerrard will sell Mings

Dean Jones claimed Ezri Konsa could be on the chopping block this summer as he’s underperformed for Aston Villa, but he wasn’t done there. The journalist also believes Tyrone Mings might be made available for sale, meaning Steven Gerrard would be offloading his first-choice defensive pair in the same transfer window.

He told GiveMeSport: “(He) could leave. I think that that’s plausible. And it’s not impossible that (Villa) could find (a) replacement at a decent value. Mings, for where Steven Gerrard is heading with this side, I think it’s plausible that they would be open to offers.”

Mings joined Villa on a five-year deal from Bournemouth in 2019 and has gone on to make 123 appearances in all competitions, scoring seven goals with seven assists. The 29-year-old has been a regular under Dean Smith and successor Gerrard, going on to captain Villa and represent England at Euro 2020 last summer, so it would be a big call to let him go.

Mings hasn’t been at his best this season, but he’s not the only one to perform below expectations. He’s 11th in the Premier League for clearances made (121) and 23rd for aerial duels won (74), so his dominance is still on display.

Gerrard would struggle to find suitors for both Konsa and Mings this summer, then having to replace the pair with upgrades. That doesn’t appear plausible or sensible.
