Manager Steve King was delighted with Deal’s second-half display in their comeback home win over Sheppey on Saturday.

Trailing to Ites forward Gil Carvalho’s effort at half-time, quickfire goals from top scorer Tom Chapman and defender Alfie Foster turned the game on its head in front of a crowd of 548.

Substitute Rory Smith also struck in awful weather conditions as it finished 3-1 to the eighth-placed Isthmian South East side, who have come from behind during every game in their three-match winning run.

“We weren’t brilliant in the first half,” reflected King. “Obviously going into the elements, we knew it wasn’t going to be easy but we probably went a little too direct.

“It was my fault, really, because we sort of set-up to be quite direct. I thought they defended quite well and we didn’t really get much change out of them, apart from the one chance when Tom Chapman went through and the keeper (Aiden Prall) made a good save.

“It was a really sloppy goal for us to concede before half-time. Then, you come in and think ‘Ooh, this is going to be difficult’ - but I thought, in the second half, we were excellent.

“I always fancied us if we got to 1-1, having won our last two games, coming from behind.

“We like shooting this way with the elements. But obviously, if they had got another one, it was going to be a tough day.

“But we were well worthy of it in the second half and it could have been more.”

While there had been few clear-cut chances in the first period, Deal had looked the more dangerous side - until Carvalho nipped in at the back post to convert a left-wing cross.
