Davy Fitzgerald will have 'eyes on the prize' with Cork

The latest destination on Davy Fitzgerald's inter-county journey has raised eyebrows, but it could well steer Cork back to the top of the camogie tree, according to former Limerick player Aoife Sheehan.

Shortly after missing out on the Galway senior hurling role to Henry Shefflin, the Clareman was a surprise addition to the Rebels’ camogie backroom team after Matthew Twomey replaced the outgoing Paudie Murray.

After five years in charge of Wexford, Fitzgerald will return to the inter-county arena as a coach, telling RTÉ Sport last year he will be involved for "one or two days a week".

Cork open their league campaign at home to Wexford at 2pm this Saturday, but Sheehan says the 2013 All-Ireland-winning manager with Clare will be focused on championship fare.

After collecting a fourth All-Ireland titles in five years in 2018, the Rebels have reached the decider just once since - last year’s three-point defeat to Galway.

"It was a great coup for Cork to land him," she told RTÉ’s Game On.

"From Davy’s point of view in going to Cork, they are almost a professional set-up in terms of camogie. It’s a side that was very near to winning last year - pipped on the line really by Galway - so it’s very exciting for him that way.

"He has a young team to work with and that’s where Davy relishes the opportunity. He brought a young Wexford team to Leinster success.

"In Cork they will be excited to work with him. He has good players to work with, but he will be down Linda Collins and Hannah Looney who are away for work reasons, but Davy will definitely have his eyes on the prize come the latter end of the championship."
