David Teeger to captain SA U19 at World Cup

David Teeger will captain the South African U19 side at their home World Cup to be staged in January and February next year. 

The news was confirmed on Friday and comes after Teeger was the subject of an internal inquiry from Cricket South Africa (CSA) investigating controversial statements he made praising Israeli soldiers last month.

CSA cleared Teeger of any wrongdoing on Wednesday night and he will now be looking to focus on the task of leading South Africa to a first U19 World Cup title since 2014. 

The squad, which includes 15 players, will be coached by Malibongwe Maketa while former Protea Paul Adams will serve as the bowling coach. 

"I extend my congratulations to each player who has secured a spot in the World Cup squad; their inclusion is well-deserved," SA U19s Convenor of Selectors Patrick Moroney said.

"This group of young cricketers has demonstrated exceptional abilities and potential. We have full confidence in their capabilities and are excited to see them compete at the highest level, especially with the added pride of playing in front of a home crowd. 

"We had initially selected three spinners in the provisional 18-player squad in the anticipation of the sub-continent conditions in Sri Lanka. But with the tournament now taking in South Africa and the change in conditions, we have named two specialist spinners and extra cover within our fast bowling group.

"And I would like to wish the players and the support staff well for the tournament and anticipate an exciting World Cup campaign."

CSA Director of Cricket Enoch Nkwe, meanwhile, was confident in the players picked.
