David Stockdale makes immediate Sheffield Wednesday impression on and off the pitch

Sheffield Wednesday stalwart Liam Palmer has described new Owls goalkeeper David Stockdale as 'impressive' after working with him during pre-season.

Stockdale Wednesday following the expiration of his contract at fellow League One side Wycombe Wanderers in June. The 36-year-old finished the regular season with the joint-most clean sheets (18) in the third-tier, as the Chairboys reached the League One play-off final.

Palmer, who has played an astonishing 364 times for the Owls, has been impressed by Stockdale's immediate impact at the club.

“Going off last season and before that, he’s been a good goalkeeper but having worked with him for a few weeks now as well, he’s impressive,” Palmer reveals.

Palmer continued: “He’s made some great saves and he has a calmness about him on the ball as well. He’s really in control of his work and that runs throughout the defence and gives them a calmness.

“He’s been great in terms of what he brings as a player and a person.”

Stockdale has enjoyed a nomadic yet decorated career with the likes of Fulham, Brighton & Hove Albion and Wycombe. He played 39 times for Fulham in the Premier League between 2009 and 2014 and even received a call-up from former England manager Fabio Capello in 2011.

He went onto earn promotion to the Premier League with Hull City and Brighton in 2013 and 2017 respectively. He also achieved promotion to the Championship with Wycombe via the League One play-offs in 2020.
