David Moyes speaks out after starting Kurt Zouma for Watford clash following shocking cat video

David Moyes insists his decision to start Kurt Zouma for tonight’s clash against Watford was not influenced by the video of the player abusing his cat.

Shocking footage emerged on Monday night showing the West Ham defender drop-kicking, chasing and slapping his pet Bengal.

But just 24 hours later Zouma has been named in the Hammers’ starting XI for their home match against the Hornets.

Speaking to BT Sport about whether the video of Zouma on social media influenced his decision to play the defender, Moyes said: ‘No, because he is one of our better players.

‘But it is certainly ongoing and the club are dealing with it, so that is a separate matter.’

Zouma picked up a knock during the dramatic FA Cup win over Kidderminster Harriers last week but is straight back into the team this evening.

Surrey Police have confirmed ‘enquiries are underway’ following an ‘allegation in relation to an animal being abused’ and they are now working with the RSPCA with a view to launching a joint investigation.

Zouma has also apologised with West Ham issuing a statement on Tuesday morning condemning their player’s behaviour and promising to investigate the matter.

‘West Ham United unreservedly condemns the actions of our player, Kurt Zouma, in the video that has circulated,’ a statement from the club read.

‘We have spoken to Kurt and will be dealing with the matter internally, but we would like to make it clear that we in no way condone cruelty towards animals.’

But for many the decision to play the former Chelsea star tonight has not gone down well with fans and even former Hammers players.

‘I think there is a lot of anger about [Kurt Zouma being picked to play] and rightly so,’ ex-defender James Collins said.
