David Moyes slams ‘scandalous decision’ to disallow West Ham equaliser against Chelsea

West Ham boss David Moyes did not mince his words after his side were denied a late equaliser at Chelsea thanks to a highly controversial call from the officials.

Chelsea news, exclusives and analysis

Moyes’ side took the lead at Stamford Bridge through Michail Antonio just after the hour mark, before Ben Chilwell levelled the score and Kai Havertz netted an 88th minute winner for Thomas Tuchel’s team.

However, in the 90th minute West Ham thought they had rescued a point when Maxwel Cornet pounced on an error from Edouard Mendy, only for VAR to overturn the goal as Mendy was adjudged to have been fouled by Jarrod Bowen as he jumped over the goalkeeper.

But replays clearly showed that while Bowen and Mendy did make contact, it was minimal and hardly worthy of a foul or the theatrical writhing on the floor from Mendy.

Moyes was visibly furious after the match and certainly let referee Andy Madley know of his anger at the full-time whistle.

‘You have seen it, it is a scandalous decision, absolutely rotten from one of the supposedly elite referees,’ the manager said post-match.

‘It doesn’t say much about whoever sent him over from VAR as well. It is an unbelievable decision against us.

‘I support a lot of the VAR stuff, I actually think the goalkeeper dives, he is faking an injury because he cannot get to the next one.

‘He did the same on the first goal as well. The referee somehow gets that so wrong it is incredible.’

The result leaves West Ham 18th in the table at the time of writing while Chelsea have moved up to fifth, but it could, and perhaps should, have been very different had Cornet’s goal stood.
