David McGoldrick to miss out on Blades' promotion push
David McGoldrick's season is over after Sheffield United confirmed the former Republic of Ireland international will require surgery to address a thigh problem.
McGoldrick suffered the injury during the crucial 2-0 win over West Brom earlier this month.
The Blades are sixth, just inside the Championship play-off places, as the season heads for a nerve-jangling climax but McGoldrick will not be part of their push for promotion to the Premier League.
"We're speaking about surgery for him, he’s not going to be available for the rest of the season," manager Paul Heckingbottom confirmed on Monday.
"A decision has been made to reduce long-term risk again."
McGoldrick announced his retirement from international football in November 2020.
He made 14 appearances for the Republic of Ireland over a six-year period, scoring his only goal in the 1-1 draw against Switzerland at the Aviva Stadium in September 2019.
Meanwhile, Enda Stevens is still awaiting a return to action as he continues to rehab from a calf issue.
