David de Gea snub proves Manchester United are getting lessons from international sides

In the past, it would have been unheard of for Manchester United's key players to be left out of their national team's squads, but in recent years, the club's poor form has made this more likely. Raphael Varane, Paul Pogba, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Fred, to name a few, have joined up with their national teams, but others such as Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho have remained at the club.

Sancho has been left out by Gareth Southgate due to the abundance of options that England have available to them in forward positions. But given the team's crisis at right-back, it is telling that Aaron Wan-Bissaka is still yet to receive a call-up.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James, Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker have all missed out on this latest batch of internationals due to injury or fitness but instead of the United full-back, Southampton's Kyle Walker-Peters was given his first call-up instead.

But is this a case of England realising the limitations of Wan-Bissaka before United? It would make sense; during his initial seasons with the club, the former Crystal Palace right-back was praised for his defensive ability but since United have transitioned to trying to retain possession, he has struggled massively.

Given the emphasis that is put on the wing-backs to create and drive the play forward in Southgate's system it makes some sense that Wan-Bissaka was not picked. But have national teams also noticed other things that United have not picked up on.
