David Beckham leaves BBC viewers furious with controversial BAFTAs comment
David Beckham upset some of his fans at the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday 18 February, where he was giving out the prize for the best new talent in movies. David looked very smart when he came on stage at the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday night.
He was there to reveal who won the award for the best first film by a British writer, director or producer.
The winner was Savanah Leaf for her movie Earth Mama. But he then made a mistake that made people angry as he called football "soccer" and fans took to Twitter to tell him off.
One person said on X, which used to be Twitter: "That might be true in football, or soccer-' DAVID BECKHAM YOU ARE ON THE BAFTAS DON'T YOU DARE PANDER TO THE AMERICANS!!!" Another person wrote: "David Beckham calling football soccer at a British awards show," and someone else said: "No David you were right the first time... it's called football!!" Another angry viewer continued: "Don't you dare say soccer, David.
Who even are you?" David wasn't the only big name there as there were many big movie stars as well as Prince William in attendance - but he went solo as his wife Kate Middleton recovers from abdominal surgery. David was seen chatting with the Prince of Wales but the footballer's appearance at the awards also didn't sit well with movie fans.
