Danny Murphy praises hat-trick hero Raheem Sterling after Norwich City display

Danny Murphy was full of praise for Raheem Sterling yesterday after he scored a hat-trick in Manchester City's victory over Norwich.

The England international has been in fine form for Pep Guardiola's side in recent weeks after a subdued start to the season.

Between August and October, Sterling made 14 appearances for City with six starts and only one goal to show for it.

However, since November, Sterling has made 16 appearances - 13 of which have been starts - and has scored 11 goals.

Former Liverpool and Fulham man Murphy was quick to laud Sterling on Match of the Day.

He said: "The figures talk for themselves but I have got huge admiration for his character and resilience.

"To bounce back after a disappointing start where people were questioning whether he would be in Pep's plans moving forward with the signing of (Jack) Grealish.

"He is playing with a nice confidence and hunger and he is in the box all of the time looking like he is going to score goals.

"For me he is the best bet to have on the left hand side because he is the biggest goal threat."

"He has basically got into the team and said to Pep: 'You are not leaving me out again'," Murphy continued.

"His fitness levels - the way he must look after himself - I know he is a naturally fit lad but to stay that sharp and grasp your chance.

"I can't eulogise about him enough. His footballing ability speaks for itself but his character and his attitude and his application make him a top player."

Manchester City and Sterling return to action on Tuesday night when they face Sporting in the Champions League Round of 16.
