Danielle Hill leads morning qualifiers at European Aquatics Championships

Danielle Hill, Lottie Cullen, Darragh Greene and Eoin Corby all advanced from their swimming heats at the European Aquatics Championships in Belgrade this morning, while Ciara McGing assured herself of a place in diving's 10m platform final.

Just three weeks after her showstopping performance at Olympic Trials in Dublin, Hill was back in the pool to compete in the 50m backstroke and the Larne competitor clocked 27.98 seconds to progress through her heat as fastest qualifier.

The Olympic-qualified Hill said: "I’m really happy after that, first swim out of the way which is always nice. I think this morning it was just about how I was feeling, it’s only been three weeks since trials so it’s nice to see where I am."

Cullen, who is competing at her first international meet, will join Hill in this evening's 50m backstroke semi-finals after recording a time of 29.30 to qualify 16th overall.

Greene, who finished seventh in the men's 100m breaststroke final last night, won his 200m heat in 2:12.87 to progress as the fifth-fastest swimmer from the heats.

Corby will also head back to the pool this evening after he was 10th fastest in the same event in 2:13.74, but Uiseann Cooke's championships are over after his effort of 2:16.15.

Max McCusker's time of 52.54 in the 100m butterfly was not enough for him to advance from the heats.

Across the city at the Serbian Sports Institute, McGing qualified in fifth place in the prelims of the 10m platform final with a score of 254.40.
