Dakota Linger and Josue Vargas: Boxing referee slated for not stopping brutally one-sided fight

Dakota Linger beat Josue Vargas at Madison Square Garden this weekend, causing a huge upset in the boxing world, but his efforts will be overshadowed.

He had the fight won before the second round had finished, leaving the heavily favoured Vargas answerless to his onslaught.

The fight was part of the undercard for Edgar Berlanga vs Alexis Angulo, but headlines have been made for the wrong reasons.

Linger was on top form and should be getting the plaudits for his performance, but it is the referee, Ron Lipton who is dominating the headlines from the bout.

Just 40 seconds into the second round, Linger connected with a powerful hit that saw his opponent eventually fall to the floor. Lipton however, deemed it a slip and the fight continued.

Linger knew he had the upper hand and looked to push home his advantage to get the W. He unleashed a flurry of hits that were left unanswered again before Vargas eventually fell through the ropes.

Instead of doing the sensible thing and calling the fight off, Lipton allowed Vargas a count and got back to his feet.

Should the ref have stopped Dakota Linger's fight with Josue Vargas earlier?
