Cristiano Ronaldo: Man Utd star 'called for teammate to be dropped'

Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly called for Harry Maguire to be dropped during Manchester United’s dismal run of form in the 2021/22 season.

Maguire enjoyed a terrific Euro 2020 campaign and went into the campaign with real confidence.

But criticism came his way after a plethora of mistakes throughout the campaign.

However, despite his poor form, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick both kept faith in Maguire.

Ronaldo and some of his United teammates did not have the same confidence in the English defender, though.

And, with United struggling in the middle of the campaign, Ronaldo tried to take matters into his own hands.

According to the Athletic, Ronaldo was part of a group of players who went up to Rangnick at Carrington in February this year to voice their displeasure.

Raphael Varane and Paul Pogba were also among the group.

Ronaldo was unhappy that Maguire had kept his place in the side and wanted him to be dropped.

“Maguire is part of the problem,” he is said to have told Rangnick.

The Austrian manager was not about to yield to Ronaldo and the group’s demands, though.

He branded them ‘inappropriate’ for speaking about Maguire when the player himself was not present.

A few players from the group subsequently apologised to the interim boss. It is unknown not made clear whether Ronaldo was among them.

Maguire has since been dropped by Erik ten Hag, who is currently favouring a centre-back partnership of Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

The report also details how Ronaldo told Rangnick ‘in no uncertain terms’ how he wanted the teamm to set up.
