Cricket SA set to announce new top job in women's cricket, in talks with head coach Moreeng

Director of cricket Enoch Nkwe hinted that Cricket South Africa (CSA) would be appointing South Africa's first director of women's cricket.

With Hilton Moreeng's contract as Proteas women's head coach scheduled to expire in June and the national team returning to competitive action in September, his future role in the game has been a point of interest.

Reappointed as head coach in 2020, Moreeng has been at the helm of the Proteas women's side since 2013 and at the heart of the team's success over the last decade.

He became the first coach to guide a senior South African cricket side to an ICC World Cup final earlier this year, where the Proteas women fell 19 runs short at a sold-out Newlands against defending champions Australia, who went on to claim their sixth T20 World Cup title.

Nkwe suggested that with the ever-growing women's side, CSA might create the role of director of women's cricket to help the prospering team.

"We are still in talks," Nkwe told News24 at a 40-year celebration of KFC Mini-Cricket at the Elkah Oval in Soweto.

"There is going to be a lot of restructuring internally.

"We'll soon be advertising the women's role of cricket and having someone who can look after the entire pathway of women's cricket, especially the top end of it.

"We need to make sure we build a strong feeder system into our national team.

"With regards to the head coach role, yes, his (Moreeng's) contract comes to an end in June so we are still in talks over what's going to be the best way moving forward," said Nkwe.

"Hopefully, in the next week or two, we'd be in a better position to share what are going to be the plans."
