Crackdown on 'rogue traders' and illegal parkers outside Old Trafford on matchday

A number of 'unlicensed' products were seized and 19 drivers were fined as part of a crackdown on 'rogue traders' and illegal parking outside Old Trafford on matchdays.

Trafford Council and Greater Manchester Police carried out an operation outside the stadium last Sunday (April 7) ahead of Manchester United's match against Liverpool. They tackled 'rogue trading', as well as 'illegal street trading'.

Licensing officers, with Manchester United's brand protection team, seized 73 products from sale for 'breaking rules'. Officers also spoke with more than 100 taxi drivers about illegal parking and 'illegally plying for fire'.

A total of 19 fixed penalty notices were handed out to vehicles parked illegally outside the ground. Council bosses said 'further legal action' will be taken against some traders who were 'obstructive' to officers.

The day of action came after a similar operation outside Old Trafford on February 24 ahead of United's game v Fulham. A spokesperson for Trafford Council said: "The day of action was carried out again to clampdown on illegal street trading, illegal parking and illegal plying for hire and was a success.

"Council officers spoke to more than 100 taxi drivers, handed out 19 fixed penalty notices for illegal parking and removed 73 products from sale.

"Safety and compliance is just as important outside the ground as it is inside the ground, and it is important that the match day experience does not have a detrimental impact on the wider community. The Regulatory Services Team will continue to carry out spot checks until the end of the season."
