Coventry City received late transfer interest in key player

Coventry City’s Chief Executive, Dave Boddy, has confirmed that the club received a bid for a “key player” in January, in conversation with Coventry Live. 

The report did not state which player was subject to the late interest, but Boddy confirmed that they received the bid at 3 pm. 

The timing of the bid would not have allowed the Sky Blues sufficient time to replace the player in question.

The Sky Blues are currently in tenth place and are chasing down a play-off position in what remains of this Championship season, meaning that keeping the core of the squad was the number one priority in January. 

Speaking to Coventry Live about this mysterious late offer, Boddy said: “The main aim of the window was to protect the assets we have got and we managed to do that.

“We had bids for senior players, which we turned down.

“We then had a tentative inquiry on deadline day for one of our key players, which always makes you nervous because at that stage you have no chance of replacing the player, should you get the significant bid that is acceptable to either the player or the club.

“The call came in at three o’clock on Monday afternoon but we have come through the window intact.”

The verdict 

When scanning through the squad, the three likely candidates who could have been subject to this late offer are Gustavo Hamer, Callum O’Hare and Viktor Gyokeres. 

The aforementioned trio have been very influential for the Sky Blues this season, although, Gyokeres has not been as clinical as he started the season. 

O’Hare has recently signed a new contract too, which means his value would most likely have been through the roof.
