Could Steve Gerrard sell Tyrone Mings?

Despite signing Diego Carlos from Sevilla, Steven Gerrard appears to be on the hunt for another centre-back this summer. Aston Villa were recently linked with Burnley’s James Tarkowski who is out of contract in the coming weeks, but his arrival would leave Gerrard with six/seven defenders.

The Villa manager has Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Kortney Hause, Calum Chambers, Diego Carlos, Boubacar Kamara at his disposal, so he’s likely to offload an existing player before the 2022/23 season begins. Read Aston Villa believe it will be Hause as he’s been on the periphery all season, but there could be another – Tyrone Mings.

As Villa’s captain and one of their most-used players in the last three years, Mings being sold would be controversial. But he’s not been without errors and has interest from Newcastle United which might be taken seriously.

Gerrard was ruthless to Matt Targett when he felt he wasn’t good enough, so it would be in character for him to accept offers for Mings if he didn’t trust him. A deal likely depends on Newcastle to make the first move, however.
