Contract news: Journalist drops big update on Rangers star Morelos before Annan

Glasgow Rangers will sell Alfredo Morelos this summer if he does not extend his contract in the coming months, Chris Jack of The Glasgow Evening Times has reported in the build-up to Saturday’s clash with Annan Athletic. 

Morelos joined Rangers from Finnish outfit HJK Helsinki in 2017 and penned an extension just over two years later.

But now that deal has less than 18 months left to run.

The Colombian has bagged 110 goals in his 214 appearances for the club, at least 38 more than anybody else in the squad.

He’s also their top earner at £33,000 per week and their second most valuable asset (behind Ryan Kent) at £11.7million, going by Transfermarkt estimates.

According to Jack, Rangers have made their decision and will look to sell Morelos this summer if he doesn’t sign a new contract before the window opens. That’s to ensure they receive a reasonable fee, rather than risk losing him for nothing in 2023.

The summer window opens on July 1, so the Gers have about four and a half months to resolve his future once and for all.

He says that Kent, Joe Aribo and Filip Helander are all in the same situation.

Connor Goldson, meanwhile, is out of contract this year and is also expected to depart.

These exits could well necessitate ‘a substantial rebuild’ at Ibrox.

These five aren’t the only players seemingly on their way out.

The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell recently reported that two veterans, Steven Davis and Allan McGregor, were to set to move on from Rangers at the end of the season.

Remarkably, if these reports come to fruition, the club could lose five of the players who featured in the 2020/21 Premiership Team of the Season on the back of their title win.
