Contact made: Newcastle now inquire about signing 'brilliant' speedster; he's 'one of the best'

Newcastle United have reportedly now asked about the possibility of signing Memphis Depay in the summer.

Depay would be remembered as somewhat of a flop at Manchester United, where he was signed from PSV for £30.6m back in the 2015/16 season.

In two terms and 53 games in total at Old Trafford, he only managed to score seven goals and make six assists over all competitions (Transfermarkt), and was subsequently sold to Lyon just one-and-a-half years later for under half of what they bought him for.

After five successful campaigns in France however, where he was scoring goals for fun, Depay then earned a big move to FC Barcelona, where he still plies his trade now.

As per Super Deporte, the St. James’ Park faithful are one of a number of clubs to have now ‘asked’ about Depay.

Both Everton and Arsenal have also enquired over his potential signature, as his future at the La Liga giants is now in doubt given the arrivals of Adama Traore, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ferran Torres in the January transfer window.

Depay will only have a year left on his contract in the summer, and so there is a chance that the North East club can get him on the cheap.

Dubbed a ‘brilliant‘ player by La Liga expert Kevin Campbell, and ‘one of the best‘ by his teammate Riqui Puig, the 28-year-old has exactly the kind of pedigree needed for the Tyneside outfit to move to the next level.

A proven goalscorer at international level as well, former Barca and soon-to-be Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman knows of his qualities, noting his ‘effectiveness, speed (and) strength‘, and so Depay would certainly be a good fit under Eddie Howe and the Magpies, adding athleticism, directness and goals on the counter-attack.
