Concerning Reading FC contract update emerges

Reading are struggling to agree a new contract for defender Tyrell Ashcroft, a report from Berkshire Live has revealed.

A graduate of Reading’s academy, Ashcroft has already made four first-team appearances for the Royals, all of which have come from the start of games in the Championship.

However, the 17-year-old’s current contract with the club is set to expire at the end of this season, which would allow him to leave the club for nothing, if no new deal is secured.

Now it seems as though progress towards a new agreement for the teenager, has not exactly been forthcoming.

According to this latest update, talks have been ongoing between the club and Ashcroft’s representatives over the past couple of months, but there has so far been little sign of the two parties finding a consensus over a new deal, leaving Ashcroft’s future up in the air.

For his part, Ashcroft himself is said to be keen to stay at Reading, but could soon have to explore potential other destinations amid that standoff at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

As things stand, Reading are currently 21st in the Championship table, five points clear of the relegation zone.

The Verdict

This will surely be a rather considerable concern for those of a Reading persuasion.

Ashcroft is clearly a promising young talent, who has the potential to be an asset for many years to come, which would make it frustrating to lose him at such an early stage of his career.

However, that is the way it appears things are going at the minute, which will only lead to more questions being asked about the direction the club is going in, if they are losing these prospects so soon.
