Comrades Marathon returns to June slot in 2023

The Comrades Marathon will return to its usual date and will be set on Sunday, 11 June 2023.

KwaZulu-Natal Athletics approved on Tuesday the date for next year's 96th edition of one of the world's biggest, oldest and most famous ultramarathon. 

Comrades Marathon Association race director Rowyn James confirmed that the 90km race would take place in June.

"Next year's Comrades Marathon will be the 48th Down Run, starting in Pietermaritzburg and finishing 12 hours later in Durban."

This year's Comrades Marathon took place in August and returned after a two-year Covid-19 hiatus.

However, this year's Comrades was shrouded in tragedy after two athletes lost their lives while taking part in the race.

South Africa's Tete Dijana won the men's race in a time of 05:30:38, while Russia's Alexandra Morozova won the women's race in 6:17:48.

Details of the entry process, qualifying criteria and other race information will be confirmed at the official media launch, the date of which will be announced in due course.
