Coach Broos blames fatigue for Angola result: 'There was a lack of freshness'

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has blamed fatigue for his side's lethargic performance as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Angola at the Mbombela Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Bafana fell behind to an early goal from Ambrosini Salvador, who caught the home players napping at a corner kick in the 20th minute. However, Bafana fought back and were rewarded when Zakhele Lepasa buried his spot-kick eight minutes later to level the scores.

However, unlike Thursday where Bafana came from behind to snatch victory against Mozambique, the hosts could not find the winner as they lacked sharpness and "freshness" which contributed to a rather tame performance.

"First of all, I'm not disappointed," Broos told reporters.  

"We would have liked to win the game that's for sure. If we expected the same performance as Thursday, it was not possible. We didn't play so good either. I felt there was a lack of determination and the players were not fresh enough today". 

Broos says the players complained about fatigue after the game against Mozambique on Thursday. With the congested calendar this year, he admits he expected the players to start showing the effects of the schedule.

"The many games of the last two weeks played a role today. Thursday after the game there were players complaining about fatigue and I can accept that because if you see what they have done with the MTN8, Carling Cup and then Thursday's game, you can expect that (fatigue).

"Secondly, I think the result is correct. We played against a difficult opponent. We played very good behind the ball and when we broke out we were very dangerous but what we done Thursday, finding the solutions, we couldn't do today and I think you agree with me that some players didn't achieve the
