Clive Woodword slaughters England's Murrayfield mindset as he tells them to ditch 'nonsense' Six Nations celebrations

Sir Clive Woodword has slaughtered England for their mindset at Murrayfield.

Scotland piled on the Six nations misery for Steve Borthwick's side with a 30-21 victory. Duhan van der Merwe's stunning hat-trick and Finn Russell's deadly kicking accuracy claimed a fourth successive Calcutta Cup for Gregor Townsend's team as they reignited their hopes of winning this year's championship after a controversial defeat to France.

England had taken the lead at Murrayfield, but an error-strewn display meant they left the Scottish capital empty handed once again. And World Cup winning coach Woodword was dismayed at what he say from some players, celebrating minor moments excessively rather than looking to take advantage with quick play. It's something he's noticed happening for some time now and insists it has to stop if England are serious about achieving anything.

"This says so much about England’s mindset," he wrote in his Daily Mail column. "Their players – Ben Earl and Maro Itoje in particular – celebrating winning penalties or turnovers isn’t anything new. It’s been happening for a while.

"I just would not allow it. This is why. One of the key moments of the Scotland game came after just eight minutes. England had started really well and had scored a lovely team try through George Furbank.

"They were 7-0 up and Murrayfield was very quiet. England had a scrum just inside their own half and won a penalty. Earl had the ball in his hands but turned his back on the opposition and started celebrating the penalty.

"All the backs also ran in and celebrated like they had just won the World Cup! Why was Earl not looking to tap and go? He should have been looking to keep Scotland under pressure...
