Christie hospital blocks to be knocked down to make way for state-of-the-art scanners

Three blocks at the Christie hospital are set to be redeveloped to accommodate new 'state-of-the-art' scanners. The plans for a new advanced scanning and imaging centre off Wilmslow Road in Withington are currently being considered by Manchester council.

If the plans are approved, the existing imaging unit would be relocated and 'critical links' to clinical services and medical experts elsewhere in the building would be created. Demolition work is due to commence in 2025 with construction completed by 2026.

According to planning documents, the existing imaging unit does not meet the NHS trust's requirements in relation to patient privacy and dignity. It is also unsuitable for some of the modern state-of-the-art scanners which would be accommodated in the new block.

The Christie is one of the world's leading hospitals for cancer treatment and research. There are currently three CT scanners in the existing imaging unit, but these are now nearing the end of their lifespan, according to a planning statement prepared by Deloitte.

It said: "The maintenance of first-class equipment and estate is essential if the Applicant is to deliver the very best care to its patients and retain its status as an accredited Comprehensive Cancer Centre. The ambition of this project is to provide an upgraded radiology service at the Christie, appropriately configured and right sized to deliver the highest standards in radiological care to improve patient outcomes and experiences."
