Christian Eriksen 'targeting' key Newcastle United clash for Brentford debut

Christian Eriksen is reportedly 'targeting' the upcoming clash with Newcastle United to make his Brentford debut and his competitive return to football.

The Danish playmaker agreed a short-term contract with the Bees in January, almost eight months on from his collapse against Finland in Euro 2020.

Eriksen's contract with Serie A champions Inter Milan was terminated at the end of last year, with domestic regulations preventing the 30-year-old from playing with an implanted defibrillator.

The attacking midfielder played for the first time since last summer in a behind-closed-doors friendly with Southend United on Monday, completing an hour in the 3-2 victory.

Eriksen marked his return with an assist for Josh Dasilva's first goal, and was twice denied himself by visiting goalkeeper Collin Andeng Ndi.

Inside World Football report the January signing is 'targeting' Brentford's home fixture against Newcastle on February 26 to make his competitive return to action.

Eriksen recently told Sky he is confident his debut will not be 'far off', having enjoyed his first week of training with his new team-mates.

Brentford are three points clear of the Magpies having played two more games, and the sides played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in November in Eddie Howe's first match in charge.
