Chris Wood on target for New Zealand as Newcastle United striker takes big step towards World Cup

Chris Wood bagged another goal as New Zealand took a huge step towards booking a World Cup place. The Kiwi striker scored the second in the All Whites' 5-0 demolition of the Solomon Islands to take his goal tally in the international break to five.

Newcastle United's January arrival bagged in previous fixtures against New Caledonia and Fiji as New Zealand coasted through the Oceania stage of their World Cup qualifying campaign. Wood will now face a tough test against CONCACAF outfit Costa Rica for a spot at November's finals in Qatar.

The All Whites have only qualified for the tournament twice before - the last being at South Africa in 2010 - as Wood looks to carry his nation to glory when they face Los Ticos this summer. Toon fans will be hoping Wood can continue his rich vein when the Magpies take on Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The former Burnley man has struggled to find the net since his £25million move - scoring just one goal - but has earned plaudits from supporters for his all-round game. Wood will now return to Newcastle as Eddie Howe's men prepare for this weekend's clash against Spurs.
