CHRIS SUTTON: The three Liverpool errors that led to Real Madrid goal

I had highlighted how the high positioning of Liverpool's full backs risked being exposed by Real Madrid in the build-up to the Champions League final, though I feared it would be a counter-attack that undid them.

In the instance of the goal, Andy Robertson is pulled out from left back to press Luka Modric. Yet Modric finds the space to turn and play a forward pass into midfield.

You can see Virgil van Dijk's frustrated reaction — back arched and with both arms outstretched — when Liverpool's press fails.

Real work the ball out to Federico Valverde on the wing and Van Dijk is having to cover for Robertson down that flank, though he doesn't go out to close down his opponent and that is costly.

Van Dijk backtracks and lets Valverde come in from the wing. At the same time, both Ibrahima Konate and Trent Alexander-Arnold are preoccupied with Karim Benzema, who is running through centrally. That allows Vinicius Junior to charge into space and on his own.

Valverde then fires the ball across the box and Alexander-Arnold can be accused of sleeping - he does not realise Vinicius is all alone behind him.

This will only add to ongoing debate about his defensive limitations. As good as he is going forward, you would like to think your right back would be alert and aware to a Madrid danger man having a tap-in behind him.
