Chris Kaba's criminal past revealed as watchdog considers disciplinary proceedings against cop who fatally shot him

The police watchdog is reviewing whether the police marksman who fatally shot Chris Kaba should face disciplinary proceedings.

It can now also be reported that Mr Kaba was a “core member” of one of London’s most dangerous criminal gangs and was allegedly directly linked to two shootings in the six days before he was shot dead by police.

Metropolitan Police officer Martyn Blake, 40, was cleared of his murder on Monday after a trial at the Old Bailey. The Met says it is now making "fresh representations" to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) regarding the case.

After completing an investigation into the shooting in 2023, the IOPC said Martyn Blake should face a gross misconduct hearing. The IOPC is now reviewing whether he should still face disciplinary proceedings, the Press Association reports.

The Met has said an acquittal in criminal proceedings “is a relevant consideration for the IOPC in determining whether to pursue disciplinary proceedings” and the force will be making fresh representations to the watchdog on this point.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Our ‘appropriate authority’, who is the senior decision-maker from the Directorate of Professional Standards for the Met, agreed with the initial assessment of the IOPC, on the available evidence, at the end of the IOPC investigation in March 2023.

“This was before the criminal proceedings where the evidence against Sergeant Blake was tested significantly in court. An acquittal in criminal proceedings is a relevant consideration for the IOPC in determining whether to pursue disciplinary proceedings.
