Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn fight OFF: Frank Warren dubs it "one of boxing's darkest weeks"

Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn has been “one of boxing‘s darkest weeks.”

That is according to legendary promoter Frank Warren, who claimed they needed protecting from themselves after a sorry state of affairs for all parties involved.

It comes after ‘the Battle of the Brits’ was prohibited by the British Boxing Board of Control after Benn failed a drugs test.

Benn’s promoter Eddie Hearn had been desperate for the fight to go ahead after several conversations with his opposite number Kalle Sauerland.

But their efforts ultimately ended up in vain as they were forced to postpone the pay-per-view bout at the last minute.

And Warren believes the board made the right call as he insisted that their primary job is fighter safety within the ring.

Writing for his column in The Daily Star he said: “We have had terrible tragedies in the sport, but this has really been one of boxing’s darkest weeks.

“Ultimately, boxing is a dangerous sport, but it is paramount that we should always maximise safety of the boxers in the ring. Managers, promoters, and the BBBofC are there to protect these brave men, sometimes from themselves.

“The boxers wanted to go ahead presumably for financial reasons. Thankfully the board stopped this from happening.

“They can argue legal cases all they want but there is no case to be had here. The fact of the matter is that Benn provided a sample which came back positive for a banned substance.
