Chris Armas explains why Fred is so popular with Manchester United managers

Former Manchester United assistant coach Chris Armas waxed lyrical about midfielder Fred in a podcast appearance this week, praising his qualities as a team player.

Ralf Rangnick was appointed interim manager at Old Trafford in November and he brought some of his own coaches to the club, adding assistant coach Armas, analyst Ewan Sharp and sports psychologist Sascha Lense to United's backroom staff.

The German and his backroom staff were unable to improve results during their six months spent at the club. United continued to underperform and they finished the season by recording their lowest Premier League points total of all time.

Armas, speaking on The Crack Podcast, has reflected on his time at United and he was asked about the mentality within the dressing room. The American used Fred as an example and he explained why Rangnick was such a big fan of the midfielder, who was also a popular pick under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and has started in every pre-season match under Erik ten Hag.

"If you have a team of Freds, you have a team that's together and they play for each other," Armas said. "If your number's cold, you give everything, if your number is not cold, I love you. He [Fred] is a great guy this one, he's not just a great guy, he's a good player and he would take some heat in the media, but he was reliable and a good team guy. He loves the team and plays for the team."
