Chocobo GP Squall: How to Unlock the FF8 Character

Squall Lionheart is one of the most polarising characters in the Final Fantasy franchise, but how can you unlock him in Chocobo GP?

Unlike Cloud Strife, players are able to unlock the FF8 character in a different way in the new Nintendo Switch game.

Despite the difference in being able to unlock the gunblade-wielding character, there is still controversy surrounding how Square Enix has decided to implement the Prize Pass, Mythril and Gil elements of the game.

Here’s everything you need to know about unlocking Squall Lionheart in Chocobo GP, including the controversy surrounding the monetisation of certain elements of the new title.

Squall Lionheart can be purchased in Chocobo GP using Gil. The official Square Enix site confirms exactly how players can do so via the Chocobo GP mode:

“In Chocobo GP mode, Season events are held every two months or so. While the Season is running, you’ll earn a Season score and improve your Season level when you take part. 

“You can then use these to obtain special rewards, such as items or Gil to spend on things like costumes, vehicle stickers and characters like Squall Leonhart in the in-game shop.”

One player on Twitter has described the method of adding paywalls for both Cloud and Squall in the game as “predatory.”

They tweeted: “#ChocoboGP is a fun racer, but the season pass for Cloud/Squall (and future characters obv) is *very* predatory.

“It’s horribly grindy while offering ways to pay for progress in a $50 game. Shame on @SquareEnix. Unless you *must* have the FF Racer, just buy the Mario Kart 8 DLC.”
